I take a trip every year somewhere out of Ca/Nv to ski and have my favorite must go to places. I am curious to see where others go, why, and maybe something that keeps you travelling hundreds of miles back for more>>>>

My favorite places out of the area so far are ......
#1) Jackson Hole (WY)- best expert terrrain in the lower 48 and 4000' of leg burning vertical, not to mention the unlimited backcountry just outside the gates and surronding area!!!! if you are not in good shape don't even bother!!!
#2) Steamboat (CO) - lightest powder I've ever skied in, and I do mean IN, knee to chest deep when I was there last and the slogan Champagne Powder is no lie .
#3) Grand Targhee (WY) - Just a great low key Mtn with no crowds, no lines,no man made snow, 3000 acres of light dry "snow from heaven not from hoses" not to mention great views of the Tetons to the east and literally unlimited Backcountry potential

so where do you vacation er, i mean ski bum in winter?

I am like Beno where I haven't had a chance to ski outside of the Tahoe area (though I haven't even done Socal). I would like to go to Whistler, Steamboat, and Jackson Hole sometime soon, and there was some talk with some of my buddies of doing a helicopter trip too. Anyone ever done one of those?

Whistler for sure! If you want to stay in the US I would hit up Sun Valley. Not that extreme but the mountain is super fun and the town of Ketchum is fun. I'd much rather hit it up than Aspen of Vail. It does not have some lame village but instead it has a sick town with fun bars....

I heard and seen that whistler is a must, unfortunatley I'm not allowed to leave the country for a while .... Past transgressions ... they won't renew my passport which thanks to boy george I now need to go to Canada, what a crock of B S. .... so until I can get it reinstated I'm stuck here (fortunatley the U.S. is pretty damned big with lots of killer mountains so keeping myself occupied hasn't been a problem)

Ahhhhh, I was also turned aroound at the border last year. Had no idea about the new policy. Anyone with any form of record is not being let into Canada. They scanned my passport and cause I had a DUI 6 years ago they would not let me into the country and I had to fly home same day I got there. Sucked bad.
If you want to go and have a record you have to go to the consulate in LA and get papers allowing you to get a pardon to get into the country. Sucks cause Whistler is the best and they are getting pounded wiht snow this year..

I am shocked to hear that; I have been going to my condo in Whistler for 10 years now and usually breeze through customs, so I did not realize they were inspecting passports that carefully
Anyhow Whistler is the best option outside of Tahoe (admittedly I have not been to Jackson)

When I went last year I was allowed through but had to pay a $300 fee to be alowed in.
When they ran my passport through a scanning maching they immediately told me to go into some lurkey room. They new the date of my DUI and random info that I was suprised they knew.
I was alowed in one time only for the fee and they marked my passport so that if I want to return in the next 7 years I have to go pay $800 at the consulate...
Bullshit. I had one too many, got a DUI, learned my lesson and paid my debt 3 years ago. Now I can't f'n ski Whistler?????? That sucks.

It gets worse. The forms to get into the US ask if you were merely charged. So if a Court decided you were innocent, you might still be refused entry.

Hmmm....I'm glad you guys brought the DUI USA-->Canada thing to my attention. I've heard about it, but didn't know how serious they were in enforcing it. I found this info. online:

9. I have a previous DUI (minor offence). What do I need to do to cross the border into Canada?

In Canada, a DUI is considered a criminal offence. If the DUI is older than 10 years with no other offences, then you are deemed rehabilitated and should have no difficulties crossing the border.
If the DUI is between 5 and 10 years old, there are certain steps that you need to take to apply for rehabilitation and admissibility into Canada.
Due to improved screening at the borders, even though you may have been able to cross into Canada in prior years, you may be subject to additional questioning and difficulties at the border. Also, it is quite important that you are honest and forthright regarding minor offences such as DUI's. It is much better to volunteer information than to conceal it.

I guess I won't be skiing at Whistler for another 2 years unless I take the "certain steps." In the meantime I would love to ski at Sun Valley, ID again. I skied there many years ago and absolutely loved it. I've always wanted to check out Jackson Hole, WY too. But maybe I should head back to Utah. The Mormons might have a good influence on me...j/k.

Stay away from the morons dude, they are evil pigs who would just assume lock you up and throw away the key than let you ski or ride... go furthur-- and hit sun valley then move on to JH ... The motel 6 is around $40 and is dog freindly !! I will never ever spend a dime that may end up in a mormons hand ... go to MT, WY, or CO, cowboys and cowgirls like to throw down.. never mind those Pious cultists in UT they suck...
