Hey Beno & Hairfarmer
Thanks to the Hetz gps navigator, we finally made it to Tahoe Vista driving from Summit at 25mph in a snow flurry. It was slow but easy coz Idjits in 2wds w/out chains kindly made room for us by parking on the embankments.
Wed 9am ok???

Maybe I missed it since I don't frequent these boards like I used to, but (other than Alpine) where else do you plan to hunt for pow?:p And from what I recall reading, you're out here til Sun the 28th, right?
Also, glad to know that you came away unscathed thru all the gnarly driving conditions fr the last few days. Kudos to you!

A snowbomb ski around is a great idea Boardoholic. Another site I'm on has 2 a season for a week. Some share acosts, and others just hook up everyday as we explore different mountains.
Northstar, a little jet lag, and hitting the first runs too hard really wore me out. I'm going back to the Stoeckli XLs because phats and me don't mix.
tommorow we go to Truckee to pick up skiis and we think we'll head to Squaw
Looking forward to Wednesday too

I can't take any credit for a "ski around." This actually seems to be what Hairfarmr has got locked-in. See....:p

Right now, I'm slated to hit The 'Wood for the day on Fri, but I'm working on making it a 2-day adventure for my li'l contingent. So I may see you & your crew out there on Thur!
originally, i was planning to head out early tomorrow morning, hit up northstar, stay in reno, and then hit up alpine on wednesday. it looks like we'll leave a little later on tuesday, head up to reno, stay the night there, meet up bright and early, 900a at alpine, then head back to reno, and then hit up northstar on thursday. i think northstar has internet in the lodge, and my wife needs to attend a web meeting during the morning on thursday. i might try to hit up sierra at tahoe in the south on saturday too. we'll see.
wow, the drive through truckee was awful. that was the first time i put chains on my subaru. i hope tomorrow's drive from reno to alpine's better.

taxman posted some pics on www.snowatch.com.au ...forums ... overseas ...taxman and vet's fabulous adventure. We've sent them, and more, to fern at Alpine to pick some for their website. Hey, we'll be famous!
Alpine is awesome. AM's Heather 'located' the lost tourists and took us to the relevant meeting place. Fern kindly obtained the complimentary lift tickets. I was decked with these phat things, and Dan geared us up with avi gear and took us out first to the Wolverine area: the powder was like nothing I've seen (but its rare down under).
Brian was freaking fast on those phats, but I suppose turning would slow him down a tad. Taxman and I did best on the moguled powder off Experts Shortcut and under one of the chairlifts. Maybe one day I'll get the mojo for handling untracked powder.
Lunch comprised beer and pizza, and later we dined on Jagermeister and beer.
It was great to catch up with y'all.
Thursday is Alpine again.
Friday, we're tossing up Sugarbowl (Taxman's a gear whore so, for the third time at Start Haus in a week, he's been given another bright idea) or Rose. (I want to find out if the chutes are open.
Saturday may be Squaw.
We're tossing up whether to move to the condo at Heavenly on Sat evening or on Sunday morning.
Then its a week of Kirkwood and Heavenly. (If Sierra is as sterile as Nstar, we'll give it a miss.
Great to catch up guys.

Taxman will put up pics of our awesome trip to Squaw. We tagged along with the really friendly Masters freeskiers/racers for the afternoon. The runs don't seem to be on the map. We hit off fromthe top of Siberia Bowl, the Palisades and runs betwen the Granite Chief area. Wow. Talk about steep down these velvety wall s and powder puff moguls.
Then we hit up an area called 'the 2nd of the 3 'P's"', hurtled down somewher between Granite Chief and Sherwood, and raced down from some chutes.
Talk about memorable. We finished up at the Ice Lounge before heading down the home trail. No one in sight - that's tthe only time the home trail is any good.
So tommorrow is Sqauw again in all likelihood and we'll move to Heavenly tomorrow evening

Yet another fab day hitting the chutes, cornices and steeps of Squaw with Scott Flint and his coaches, Jeff Paul. These guys are incredible. (It sure made Heavenly booooooring today).
Looking forward to Kirkwood on Tuesday. Where do we met, and when????

Kirkwood with Taxman & Hairfarmr was on par with Squaw and Alpine, imo. Awesome terrain.
The nice Ski Rescue guys gave me a chaufeurred trip in a sled, but where was the mini bar?
The knee feels a lot better after my insurer upgraded me to a business class flight back to Oz this Saturday.
We'll be skiing with Hairfarmer on Friday at Kwood again - I've still got one good leg.
Cheers

Well the insurer approved a business class trip back to Oz. Yippee.
Hairfarmer, thanks for the pics. What time Friday at K'wood? Meet at Monte's again? Just make sure you don't let Taxman do a triple somersault on those wicked baby slopes. :p

I made it back in one piece (and was scanned, dusted and searched at sfo). Was terrific catching up with Hairfarmer & Brian. I think Taxman's somewhere over the Pacific but he filed a trip report, with pics, on the Overseas forum of www.snowatch.com.au. See y'all in late March/early April 09, - and in January 2010. Cheers, Vet.

A dusting of snow plus plenty of rain have almost extinguished the fires down here, some of which were getting perilously close to my Mt Buller - only 2 years ago the snowmaking machines at Mt Buller kept fires away from lodges and chairlifts. In light of the drought in California mirrorring our droughts, I hope the Governator reads the recommendatons that will be made by a Royal Commission.
